Engineering Manager

FirstVet has been building a digital platform since we started in 2016, mainly aiming to create a world where every pet can thrive, not just survive - no matter the circumstances. In order to facilitate FirstVet’s continuous international growth, we’re reinforcing our tech team with a new Engineering Manager.
As an Engineering Manager, your main responsibility is to build high-performing teams by establishing effective ways of working and growing individual team members, making sure that your teams have what they need to be successful and are aligned with FirstVet’s overall vision and strategy. While your primary focus is on your teams, you also take a holistic view by driving improvement activities and participating in strategic planning across the entire tech organization together with the CTO and your Engineering Manager peers.
You will focus on:
- Professional development of your direct reports: performance reviews, coaching and mentoring, providing feedback, career progression and promotions.
- Planning, coordination, execution, reporting, and delivery of team initiatives.
- Making sure that the team has effective ways of working and that they are
continuously looking to improve in this area. - Identifying and facilitating learning opportunities for the team.
- Building a healthy team culture in line with FirstVet’s overall organizational
values. - Together with peers, Tech Leads, and CTO, establishing, communicating, and
following up on the team’s vision, strategy, objectives, and KPIs, fostering a
culture of clear ownership and accountability. - Continuously communicate, nurture, and develop relationships between
product and engineering across your domains. - Remove team impediments.
- Capacity planning, hiring, staffing, onboarding, and offboarding.
- Activities to improve our employer brand to attract and retain tech talent.
- Optionally, 10%-20% coding or other technical tasks, depending on team size,
team needs, skills, and interests. To avoid blocking the team, you make sure
to avoid technical tasks along the critical path.
You have:
- Solid developer background, with at least 4-5 years working as an
engineer; - At least two years of experience working in a management role, leading
teams, and owning the delivery of the team; - A solid experience working in an agile way with cross-functional teams, preferably from a product and tech company;
- Preferably experience in B2C and B2B environment;
- Experience in setting ways of working and team targets for engineering teams, follow-up on delivery, and developing performance on both team and individual levels;
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills;
- Full professional proficiency in English with excellent written and verbal
communication skills.
Apart from the above-mentioned requirements, it goes without saying that an interest in animals is highly desirable. We’re a pet-oriented organization and it’s not unusual to run into our office dogs or for a cat to join our Zoom calls!
